Survival Swim Lessons
At Cypress Survival Swim, we offer 15 minute 1:1 swimming lessons for children ages 6 months to 6 years old. Shorter, more frequent lessons is one reason why our program is so effective. This enables your child to learn in weeks, not years. Your child will learn true survival swim skills to rescue themselves in a water emergency. Our swim-float-survive method paired with our gentle approach allows children to grow in confidence and skills around the water
We prioritize safety and enjoyment in every lesson, ensuring your child learns to swim with confidence and joy.
Infant Survival Swim lessons are highly specialized survival swim lessons that teach your baby to roll over from a facedown (submerged) position to their backs to float and breathe. At the end of 24-28 lessons, your child will be able to pass the 2-minute float test.
Infant survival swim provides children the opportunity to learn a life-saving skill, all while building trust and confidence in and around the water. Once a week maintenance lessons are then recommended.
Swim-float-survive lessons are a highly specialized sequence designed specifically for toddlers and young children.
Children in swim-float-survive lessons learn to swim a short distance, keep their face fully submerged, and learn to roll on their backs for rest and a breath of air. Then, they learn to flip back onto their stomach and continue swimming to safety. At the end of 24-28 lessons, the goal of swim-float-survive lessons is that a child can find an exit point in a pool and swim-float-swim there safely and save themselves from a water emergency. Once a week maintenance lessons are then recommended.
At Cypress Survival Swim, we believe that every child deserves a safe and enjoyable introduction to swimming. Our lessons are designed to cater to the unique needs of young learners, ensuring they not only learn to swim but also develop a love for the water.
Our swim lessons are child centered with a gentle approach that meets each child’s individual needs and abilities with one on one lessons. We provide focused attention and instruction that helps children progress at their own pace, building confidence and skills in a supportive environment.
We incorporate essential safety techniques into every lesson, teaching children how to be aware of their surroundings and respond appropriately in the water. Our instructors are trained in water safety and emergency response, ensuring a secure learning experience.
Our Instructor
Meet Lisa Essner
My name is Lisa Essner. I am the owner of Cypress Survival Swim based in Midland, Texas and mother to two children. I have been a survival swim instructor since 2017.
My interest in becoming a swim instructor came after 15 years as a Respiratory Therapist in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Houston’s largest trauma center, where I dedicated my career to saving children’s lives. Each year, the number of drownings I was seeing seemed to be increasing and I soon realized that I could make a positive difference by helping to save a child’s life before they drowned, instead of after.
I became certified through Survival Swim Development Network in 2017. Through SSDN I am able to keep up with the latest methodologies and techniques. I consistently strive to provide the best, most gentle survival swim lessons, and empower children to rescue themselves in case of a water emergency. I want families to have happy, confident swimmers with the extra layer of security of life saving skills anywhere they go.

FAQ
Children can start survival swim lessons as early as 6 months old. Ideally, every child should learn survival swim skills before they begin walking. Water sources are everywhere and drowning can happen in as little as 2 inches of water. As your child is able to access water sources, they need the skills to turn their bodies away from the water and breathe calmly.
If your child is not potty trained I require they wear 2 layers of swim diapers. First layer is a disposable swim diaper, second is a happy nappy swim diaper or the swim diapers that I will have available to purchase. These diapers are the best at keeping “contaminants” from leaking out. Otherwise, just a swimsuit and a towel. NO GOGGLES.
During the first lesson, our instructors will assess your child's comfort level in the water and introduce them to basic swimming skills. We focus on building trust and confidence, ensuring a positive experience from the start.
We provide regular updates on your child's progress, including skill development and areas for improvement. You can also discuss your child's achievements with their instructor after each lesson.
Not at first. However, I will encourage a parent to get in the pool at the end of the program to understand how to swim with your child and the child to swim with you. I also allow parents that would like to get in the pool at the end of the week to get in and learn how to “swim” with their child. It's a team effort. The methodology taught by Cypress Survival Swim was carefully designed by the Survival Swim Development Network to blend the instructor, child & parent into a learning team. Each person has a specific role to fill, working toward the same end goal - the success of the child.
Placing your child in the water for the first time can feel scary. That’s why I invite parents to watch and offer a seating area near the pool.
If your child is struggling to bond with their instructor, we may ask you to stand out of sight of your child so that they can focus on their new skill. Remember, it can take 3-6 lessons for your child to bond with their instructor, so we want to give your child time to get comfortable in the water without you. After all, you won’t always be with them if they find a water source on their own.
Once your child is bonded, you’re welcome to come closer to the pool and cheer for them as they master getting to their float!
New experiences could cause a child to cry: the first time they stay with a grandparent, when you buckle them into a car seat, or even taking a bath at home. At first, survival swim lessons will be new to your child. They may cry at first; however, our gentle approach feels more like playtime in the water. Your child is always safe in the water with their instructor. Most children who cry at lessons at the beginning will bond with their instructor, and the tears lessen between the third and sixth lessons. This is dependent on the child and age. Most children 10mo to 18 mo are going through the “stranger danger” phase. Just think they are babies and you do EVERYTHING for them. I am teaching them to do things on their own. It is hard and uncomfortable. They’ll get more comfortable with every lesson gaining a sense of accomplishment and ease in the water! As the parent, be positive and encourage your swimmer.
All of our lessons are built on muscle memory. As your child’s bodies and muscles continue to grow, it is important to maintain the skills they have learned. If they don’t continue to practice the skills, then as they grow, everything will become unfamiliar, and their muscles won’t retain it. As no swimmer is “drown proof” This makes it easier to keep the “swim-float-swim” skills fresh over the colder months and makes for a much faster refresher the following spring.
I teach in my heated indoor pool. During the cooler months, the pool temperature is kept at 88 degrees.
